View this post on Instagram We felt compelled to commemorate #AsthmaandAllergyAwarenessMonth seeing as archivists very frequently encounter things that might make one's asthma or allergies flare up like mold, dust, and, well, decades of grime! Take, for example, the above box and its contents just before it was vacuumed and placed back into the stacks. #dyk that despite PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) being in everyone's vocabulary these days, archivists are long familiar with the benefits of PPE as protection against the common allergens found in our collections? It's true! We employ masks, Nitrile gloves, and even Tyvek suits for safety if the situation calls for it (also pictured is one of our archivists wearing all three). And since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the McCormick Library has donated part of its N95 mask stash to the Office of Research Safety and Northwestern University hospitals. .
