View this post on Instagram In need of dorm decorating inspiration? Why not take a cue from NU alum Ryan Du Val, whose career as a muralist began in an NU dorm! After spending time in Italy with his family over the summer before his sophomore year in 1998, Du Val arrived back on campus a bit before the rest of the students in his building, and decided to recreate elements of the Sistine Chapel on the ceiling of his Bobb-McCulloch Hall dorm room! . Decorate with caution, however.... Although he was originally granted permission to complete the painting, Du Val was later asked to remove it, leading to a lawsuit that he eventually won. He was allowed to keep his mural up for the remainder of the academic year, making him a bit of a local celebrity (as is evidenced by the Sun-Times photo in image 1)! . By his junior year, Du Val stayed away from campus housing entirely - presumably to be free to decorate as he pleased. Du Val triple majored in religion, computer science, and music, and continued his mural painting after leaving Northwestern and Evanston housing! . #BacktoSchoolChicago #nualumni #nuarchives #universityarchives #nuhistory #archivesofinstagram A post shared by NU Archives (@nuarchives) on Sep 25, 2019 at 10:21am PDT
