What Alumni Can Access

Below are library resources available to alumni. Visit this page for details about alumni access to library resources and spaces.

  • Alumni can enter the University Library during public access hours. Please bring a government-issued photo ID to check in at the welcome desk.
  • Alumni can obtain borrowing privileges. See this page for additional information.
  • Visitors can use the internet on their personal devices in the library using the “Guest-Northwestern” wireless network. NOTE: This wireless network will not give access to subscription databases. 

Electronic Resources Access

Due to licensing restrictions, access to library e-books, databases, and other electronic resources is limited to current students, faculty, and staff. 

Tips for Accessing Databases

  • If you are in the area of Northwestern Libraries, you can access some databases on library computers with a temporary guest NetIDs. Temporary guest NetIDs can be requested at the University Library welcome desk on Level 1. Guest NetIDs are valid for one day.
  • Public Libraries often provide access to research databases. Check your local library's website.
  • Public University Libraries may allow visitors to use databases onsite. It is best to confirm with the library about guest policies before visiting.
  • Open access databases provide free access to academic materials. See the following pages on this guide for suggestions for free databases.
