Legal Advice

This guide contains information about copyright law. It is not legal advice. If you require legal advice, please consult an attorney.

Face-to-Face Teaching

Performance or display of a work by instructors or students in the course of face-to-face teaching at a nonprofit educational institution, in a classroom or similar place devoted to instruction, is permitted under copyright law. In the case of a motion picture or audiovisual work, the copy of the work must be lawfully made to qualify. (17 U.S. Code § 110(1).)

Course Reserves

Course Reserves can assist with making print and electronic material available at the Libraries and on Canvas. They also have a set of guidelines for providing access to copyright-protected materials, and can assist with making material available in a way that follows these guidelines.
