How to Locate Books

NUsearch finds Northwestern library books, documents, articles in some databases, and other material.

You can also search NUsearch right from the library homepage. Please watch a one minute video tutorial below which shows how to find a book using NUsearch and how to request and pick it up at the circulation desk.

Open Textbooks for Engineering

The listing of open textbooks is organized by engineering discipline.  To browse resources within a discipline, select the appropriate icon.  Note that some specific disciplines have been grouped within a larger discipline (e.g., transportation engineering texts can be found in civil & environmental engineering).  If you don't find a needed discipline, try the search icon, which will connect you to the Mason OER Metafinder search engine.

Patent Resources

US patents and patents from other countries

When an inventor comes up with a new creation/product, usually the first thing they want to do is to get it patented to make sure the owner with the right to exclude others from exploiting the patented technology, including, for example, making, using, or selling the patented invention. Are you wondering whether someone has made a device to the one you want to make? You can see if a similar product has been patented in InnovationQ Plus, Derwent, or the US patent database.

Industry standards

Available Standards Provided by the Libraries

ISO Standards

Currently, the Libraries doesn't provide access to ISO standards. For faculty, if you need ISO standards for a class, the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) University Outreach Program will provide ISO standards for classroom use. You can contact ANSI directly or email Anna Ren, Engineering Research and Collection Librarian, for more information. For students, please contact your faculty directly about accessing to ISO standards.

If you need ISO standards for your research or project outside of classroom, you can make a request through our Interlibrary Loan Service.

All Other Standards

Please make a request through our Interlibrary Loan Service for all other standards. If you need help, please schedule an appointment with Anna Ren, using "Schedule a Research Consultation" tab in the left column.
