Teaching Africa K-12 Collaborations

We collaborate with the community around us to teach, learn, research, explore, experience and celebrate Africa in a variety of ways. We leverage our rich and expansive collections, expertise and community to create one of a kind community of scholars - at different stages of and with varying approaches to scholarship. In addition to welcoming individual curiosity and engagement, we are collaboratively involved with the following communities and organizations:

Dawes Elementary School

Every year, we collaborate with the Librarian at Dawes School to create a program that supports the school's celebration of Black History. For 2021, as Fast 5 reported, "Dawes Elementary’s African American Achievement Committee, in partnership with Northwestern University’s Library of African Studies, created an artistic wonderland! The committee collaborated with Florence Mugambi, African Studies Librarian, who created a video highlighting five exceptional African artists based on the school’s Black History Month topic exploring Black visual artists." View the school's showcase and watch Visual Artists from Africa.
