POL_SCI 101-6 Freshman Seminar: Data Ethics: Finding Datasets

Searching for Datasets

A variety of strategies, listed in suggested order of use.

  1. Search the secondary research literature of your discipline to identify articles and other publications on your research question.  What datasets are cited?  For examples see Finding Research That Cites Data
  2. Explore the Social Sciences Data Resources guide.  Notice the many tabs for broad topics.
  3. Search Data Archives or Repositories (a few are listed to the right)
  4. Search a Data Index such as ProQuest Statistical Insight or Statista.  While these provide links to statistical tables, check the source notes for individual tables to find references that could lead you to the source dataset.
