Loading/Unloading Filament

MakerBot Replicator+ and Z18

Loading the Filament:

  • Select filament spool from the lower level cabinet (located directly underneath the paper towel dispenser)
  • Once filament spool is removed from the Ziploc bag, locate the end of the filament spool and cut the tip with pliers so that it is now modified to a 45 degree angle (if needed).
  • Insert filament spool onto the Makerbot core clips.
    • Attach one side of the spool first, then press down on the adjacent core clip and push the other side of the spool into place.
  • Insert the tip of the filament into the clear pipe, and push it through until it comes out through the other end of the pipe.
  • On the MakerBot menu, use the dial to scroll over to ‘Filament’ and push the dial to select.
  • Once in ‘Filament’, use the dial to scroll down to ‘Load Filament’ and select.
    • The Smart Extruder needs to warm to 215 degrees.
  • Once it reaches the ideal temperature, feed the filament into the top of the Smart Extruder until you feel the device tug on the filament.

Unloading the Filament:

  • Select ‘Filament’
  • Select ‘Unload Filament’
  • Wait for Smart Extruder to warm to 215 degrees.
    • Once warmed, it should start to push the filament out.
    • Pull the filament once it’s being pushed out.
    • Push it through the pipe until it is completely out, then cut the tip at a 45 degree angle again for the next print job (if needed).
