Museum websites can be valuable sources of information on artists, themes ans time periods. Many also have prior exhibitions archived. Search "Modernism" on museum sites to get started.
- The Art Institute of ChicagoThe Art Institute of Chicago collects, preserves, and interprets works of art of the highest quality, representing the world’s diverse artistic traditions, for the inspiration and education of the public and in accordance with our profession’s highest ethical standards and practices. In 1913 the museum startled the city by hosting the Armory Show, a sprawling exhibition of avant-garde European painting and sculpture. Exceptional purchases from that controversial exhibition launched the museum’s collection of modern art.

- The Modernist Studies AsociationThe Modernist Studies Association took shape in 1998 as part of an effort to provide a venue, interdisciplinary and international, in which scholars of Modernism could contribute to ongoing reshapings of the field. Founding members of MSA felt the profession needed a forum for the exchange of recent research: a forum open to the increasingly interdisciplinary dynamics of contemporary scholarship. Since that time, the annual conference has aimed to provide such a forum, as has the official journal of the MSA, Modernism/modernity, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.
The Armory Show of 1913, or the International Exhibition of Modern Art, was the first large exhibition of modern art in America. It was a revelation for audiences accustomed to conventional depictions of realism, and who may have been unprepared for the experimental world of the Cubists and Futurists, among others. It showed in New York, Chicago, and Boston, profoundly influencing the collective understanding of just what art could be.
