DataBank: Map Research to Collections

Faculty Research Interests Mapped to Subject Headings & Classification Systems

Word analysis:

  • Copy/paste from faculty websites the words that describe their research and teaching interests.
  • Create a spreadsheet or database of these words.
  • Conduct a collection analysis based on word analysis:
  1. Map the words to LC Subject Headings and search holdings by these subject headings. To take a step further, compare these results by running identical subject headings searches in peer libraries. See, WorldCat Comparative Analysis and Public Catalogs Analysis. And/or, explore the interdisciplinarity/homogeneity of the results through an analysis of the call numbers.
  2. Map the words to Dewey or LC classifications and search for holdings within the existing collection.
Analyze the size, strength, age, and other characteristics of the results to test the relevance of current collecting patterns.
