GIS: Geographic Information Systems: Physical & Digital Map Collection

Northwestern University Library's GIS guide.

Origins and Specializations

Origins

Northwestern University's cartographic collection was established circa 1947 as an official depository for the US Army Map Service. Most maps in the library are centralized and housed in Main Library (B190) as part of the Government and Geographic Information collection.

Specialty

Northwestern's cartographic collection focuses on local and international maps including Illinois, the Great Lakes, Africa, and World War II ephemera. Types of maps include topographic and thematic.

Digitial Cartography

In collaboration with Repository & Digital Services at NUL, we are working towards digitizing our entire map collection. To access our current digitized maps visit our Map & Atlas Collection page.
