Shafer, David A. The Paris Commune: French Politics, Culture, and Society at the Crossroads of the Revolutionary Tradition and Revolutionary Socialism

This traditional survey presents the precedents to and establishment of the Paris Commune, followed by analysis of a number of questions related to the subject. In later chapters Shafer discusses the various ideological strains within the Commune, women's roles and gender constructs, and the culture of revolution and socialism in late 19th-century Paris. A useful document for introduction of various related themes.
