Use these resources below to help format and cite research in your papers and assignments.
Writing Citations
- The Chicago Manual of Style Online (17th ed.)The SPS Master's program in Data Science requires that students use the Chicago Manual of Style for bibliographic citations. Be sure to use the author-date format (do not use the notes-bibliography format). See chapter 15, Author-Date References for examples.
- Chicago Manual of Style at Purdue OWLThis free resource, part of Purdue University's Online Writing Lab or OWL, offers examples for writing citations in the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) for research papers. Ignore the interactive ads and use the menu on the left side of the webpage to navigate the contents of the site (for example, click the link for CMOS Author Date Sample Paper to go directly to that section).
Per SPS MSDS program guidelines, use the CMOS author-date format, not the notes-bibliography format.

For those who are interested in using optional software management tools, Northwestern offers free citation software accounts for enrolled students as follows:
