Visiting Africana Artists

A collaboration between the Herskovits Library and the Block Museum of Art.

About Kader Attia

Kader Attia in the Herskovits Library

French-Algerian artist Kader Attia was in residence at the Herskovits Library of African Studies during the Spring 2016 quarter. He will present an exhibition at the Block Museum in Winter 2017 that will be informed by his research in the collections of the Herskovits Library. Attia’s residency is co-presented by the Block Museum of Art and the Northwestern Library.

A predominant strain of Attia’s practice is engaged with a reconsideration of archives in order to explore what the artist see as the inextricably linked enterprises of colonialism, particularly in Africa, and the development of modernism in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
