1968: The Hagstrum report (A Community of Scholars)The Hagstrum Report (1969)
This report focused heavily on encouraging student “civility”; recognizing the diverse interests and goals of the student body, it sought to develop a model with adaptability to different student needs. The Report acknowledged the need to balance various tensions (space for diversity vs. unity of the university; respect for private life while building strong public life; balancing individual freedoms with corporate responsibilities). While encouraging the pursuit of knowledge beyond the classroom is recommended to foster a “community of scholars” (the title of the book-length report), the Report nonetheless maintains a strong divide between learning in the classroom and life outside the classroom. The import of providing room for student recreation and the pursuit of pleasure is emphasized. The Report acknowledges that simply providing facilities is not sufficient.
