Methodology for Subject Assignment

Works for which there are no Subject Specialists were classified under disciplines or within one of the categories of "Unassigned." The determination was based on Dewey or LC. There are 3 titles assigned the subject "Humanities," 12 assigned the subject "Sciences," and 74 assigned the subject "Social Sciences." See tab "SocSciencesGenl" for analysis of the latter.

Because the Subject Specialist for English Literature also selects language and literatures not otherwise assigned, there are 2 "English Literature" designations: English Language & Literature and English: Other Langauge & Literature. The latter includes, e.g., Hindi poetry.

Language and Literature designations: In all cases except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, the works are assigned to the literature as subject, regardless of the language. That is, works about Shakespeare written in French are assigned to English Lang&Lit; English translations of novels by Chekhov are assigned to Slavic Studies Lang&Lit.

Assignment Sequence:

1. by call number

2. by ISBN search in WorldCat

3. by title search in WorldCat

4. by translation of title

5. by title words in Google Scholar

African Studies is an exception to this order. Call numbers as well as words in the titles were used to identify monographs related to African Studies.
