About the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies

Established in 1954, the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University is the largest separate Africana collection in existence.

The Collection

Herskovits library comprises of a vast collection of books including many in various African languages, photographs, maps, posters, videos, art objects, ephemeral items, and other artifacts. Information about many of these can be obtained by searching our catalog.
